Hair Fair – Top Hair Picks for Mesh Heads

Mina

Someone once asked me what I would focus my blog on, if it weren’t for mesh bodies, and honestly I think if mesh bodies hadn’t come out I would have started focusing my blog on my other shopping addiction, HAIR!! It makes sense therefore that I am so excited about Hair Fair this year (like everyone else I imagine!).

Something is different this year though – and no, it’s not the Fair. Yes, they’re having their 10th anniversary, but the Fair is the same amazing event that is put together every year. The difference is that this year, we’re shopping with different needs. This year, we have mesh heads and mesh bodies, and strangely enough these two do have an impact on how hair looks on our avatars. How? Well Mesh Heads, that one is kinda obvious. We’re replacing the system head with a mesh head, so of course rigged hair (and the newly popular fitted mesh hair) is always going to be problematic, because it’s attaching/fitting to the invisible system head that lies under our mesh heads. Mesh bodies is another story.

It’s a relatively common practice now for hair designers to include ‘busty’ options with their hair. This became a ‘standard’ after the introduction of lolas breasts, because quite simply long hair that covered the breast area would just go straight though lolas. The thing is, the market has changed, and lolas are far less popular now that mesh bodies are in the mix, but hair designers are still creating using the ‘lolas’ busty option. So when will hair designers start editing their ‘busty’ options to be more mesh body friendly?

Whilst not a huge issue, it is an issue, because mesh body breasts (unless you have them exceptionally large) are typically much smaller than what the ‘busty/lolas’ equivalent hair has them set to be – yet they’re still bigger than system breasts. We need an ‘inbetween’. Now this leaves two options for designers – fitted hair for mesh heads/mesh bodies (of which there are too many combinations to make it practical), or making an ‘interim’ size, somewhere between normal and busty. Personally I think the latter is much needed, although it would be amazing to see some fitted mesh hair made specially for mesh heads (keep in mind that this would require models of mesh heads that hair designers most likely cannot get hold of, so it’s more a rhetorical suggestion).

All that said though, there are ways to select hair more suitable for your mesh head/body situation, and I decided that I would do this at Hair Fair!

If you’re not familiar with the terms, there are three types of hair:
Unrigged – this means you can edit/move their hair
Rigged – this means the hair is ‘attached’ to the system head, so you cannot move it up/down
Fitted mesh hair – this means the hair is fitted to the system head.

In my experience, I’ve had a hit and miss experience with the most common type (that being Rigged hair) – although more hits than misses – because it all depends on how the designer rigs it/makes the hair. Unrigged hair is your best bet for a mesh head, simply because you move it around and do what you need to make it not sink into the top of your head – where as fitted mesh hair almost always sits oddly on mesh heads. All that being said, it’s all about the designer and how they make it, so as with everything, demo!

For the Hair Fair however, here are some of my top picks for mesh heads 🙂

MINA

I’ve always loved Mina hair – it’s always so realistic and high quality, and I love the option of using materials enabled versions of the hair. The Mina hairs are all rigged, with the exception of the optional bangs on the Nicolet style – which I loved, because it meant I could adjust it a little to make it look more natural on my mesh head. That being said, all styles worked perfectly with my Lelutka head!

RUNAWAY

Runaway makes some truly traffic stopping styles, and I love her use of blunt fringes and volume. All her Hair Fair hair is rigged but the Harley hair does include an unrigged version – not that I had any trouble with it fitting my mesh head anyway.

OTHER HAIR

Honestly, there are so many amazing styles at the Hair Fair that worked well on my various mesh heads – so I won’t list them all, lest we all be here for the next century, but I’ve included my final two top picks below – ‘I want you’ from Lamb (Hair Fair Link), and ’40’15’ from ( r e d ) M i n t (Hair Fair Link):

Lamb - need you RedMint - 40'15

So have you been to Hair Fair yet? What’s been your favourite?

Weekly Fitmesh Finds

Country Strong

I know I’m a little early with the fitmesh finds this week, but there has just been TOO MUCH going on to not do an early Fitmesh Finds post!

First of all to clarify – Yes, the Belleza mesh body update is coming out this weekend! You can read more HERE, but I will absolutely update the Mesh Body Review for it as soon as I can possibly can 😀

Now for those of you who may be new to reading my blog, first of all, welcome! By way of introduction, the Weekly Fitmesh Finds post is the post I write each week outlining the newest Mesh Body Fitmesh clothing (that is, specialty mesh clothing that is designed for mesh bodies such as Maitreya, Belleza, Slink Physique etc.). In these posts I include everything I can find, including Men’s Mesh Body Fitmesh items (although these are few and far between – but this week I’ve found two!).

In the image above, I’m wearing the newest releases from Blueberry and HUCCI, both of which can be found at Uber in mesh body compatible sizes. I’m in LOVE with this shirt – you can wear it with the bra underneath or on its own, and it just screams country sexy to me, so I had to head over to Image Essentials and wander around their farm area for a while.

Mesh Body Troubleshooting & FAQ’s

Alice

Using a Mesh Body can sometimes leaving you feeling like you’ve fallen down the rabbit hole – and now you’re stranded in Wonderland! Well, I can relate to that, so below I’ve compiled some Frequently Asked Questions that land in my inbox, hopefully you’ll find a solution here! 🙂

FAQ & TROUBLESHOOTING MESH BODIES

1) What is Omega?

Omega appliers were created to be ‘universal appliers’, meaning, you could buy a clothing item with only one applier in it (omega), and know it would work on your body. This saves time for designers, because they only have to make one applier. This has worked very well, with most mesh body creators agreeing to make their bodies ‘omega compatible’, however two popular designers, Slink and The Mesh Project, have declined to do so. Other bodies, like Belleza, Maitreya, Eve, Lena, Banned, Perfect Body – are all Omega compatible.

So how do you use an Omega applier? Well it’s no different to any other applier (ie. you attach the HUD then click the ‘apply’ button and the clothing appears), however you may need to ‘activate’ the Omega in your body first, depending on what type you use. By going to Omega headquarters, you can join their free group and purchase the applier for your body for 1L (sometimes 3L). Depending on your body, you may have to rez your body and drag/drop the script in, or open the installer HUD and hit ‘install’, or in the case of Maitreya, wear a relay HUD when you want to use Omega appliers. Some bodies like Lena, you don’t have to do anything at all. After that, you can buy any outfit that has Omega appliers, which opens your range a lot.

2) What’s the big deal with ‘fitmesh?’ What does that even mean?

Okay first let’s look at what ‘standard mesh’ is.

Standard Mesh is the standard sizing mesh clothing you find in most stores. You will most likely find that your body will ‘break through’ the standard mesh because the mesh body *isn’t* the same shape as the standard SL Avatar (and because most standard SL avatars break through them anyway), so this is where your Alpha HUD becomes necessary, to hide parts of your body. Standard mesh is mostly rigged, which means it’s attached to your body at a certain point or points (imagine imaginary anchors holding the clothes on your body at the shoulders, stomach and hips for example). Now standard mesh (rigged or not) is solid, which means it doesn’t stretch with your body, it just warps as you move a little.

Fitted Mesh is mesh that is made to stretch, grow/shrink and move with an avatar. Standard fitted mesh (that is, fitmesh that does *not* have a specific size for a mesh body) is fitted to the SL default system avatar. This means that the garment will move with your sliders, but if you’re wearing a mesh body, because mesh bodies and system bodies are different shapes, you will find it difficult to make standard fitted mesh fit you.

Speciality Fitted Mesh – eg. Fitmesh for Maitreya or Fitmesh for Belleza – this type of fitmesh has been created by a designer and specifically fitted to your mesh body. What does that mean? Well it means that (depending on how well the creator has ‘fitted’ it to your body) it should fit your mesh body, irrespective of your size/shape! Now this isn’t a perfect science, because mesh clothing creators need certain models from each mesh body creator to make ‘perfect’ fitmesh for their body, and many creators do not give this out. For this reason, many designers are ‘eyeballing it’ or just plain doing their best to make the garmet be the closest fit it can be for your body. So always demo demo demo and remember, creators doing this are doing their best. It’s incredibly difficult to do, and I say good on them for giving it a go!

3) My HUD isn’t working/isn’t responding/won’t detach

  • Are you in a sim that allows you to run scripts? (Note – some sandboxes/shops/sims don’t allow scripts to be used, and your HUD requires that to work).
  • Have you tried to detach and reattach the HUD? If the HUD won’t detach, odds are it’s ‘stuck’, which means you have reboot your viewer to fix it.

4) I was wearing applier pants/a top/whatever when I teleported, but now that I’ve landed it’s gone!?

This is typically a result of wearing two or more appliers on layers that overlap each other (for example – wearing stockings on the underwear layer, and high waisted shorts on the clothing layer). In summary, each of these clothing items has transparency in them (alpha) and that causes a graphics issue which results in one layer partially or fully becoming transparent against the other. To fix this, if your mesh body has a ‘mask mode’ function, you can try using that on your shorts/pant layer. It will reduce the quality of the textures, but at least you’ll have pants when you land! Otherwise, it’s generally safer to stick to one layer at a time.

5) I’m try to apply skin/a top/pants/whatever and it won’t show on my body when I press ‘apply’!

  • Are you in a sim that allows you to run scripts? (Note – some sandboxes/shops/sims don’t allow scripts to be used, and appliers require that to work).
  • Are you using the correct applier for your body? (ie. a Maitreya applier for a Maitreya body)
  • Are you using an Omega applier? If so, is Omega installed in your body (not all bodies have this included out of the box, Belleza for example requires you to buy the Omega Installer, then press the ‘Install’ button to put the scripts in the body. Don’t forget, if you update your body, you’ll need to do this process again!), or do you have the relay HUD on (for bodies like Maitreya you must wear the relay HUD any time you want to apply Omega items)?

6) My body has weird shadows on it/looks really strange!?

For Mesh Bodies to render correctly, you must have ‘Hardware skinning’ enabled in your settings, or it will look like you’re deflating. For Firestorm users you can find this setting in your Preferences – Graphics tab (tick the box that says’ hardware skinning’). This basically allows some aspects of avatar rendering to be handled by your graphics card, which increases performance, especially for heavy render items like mesh bodies. For 99% of people, this must be ticked for mesh bodies to ‘look’ correct.

7) My mesh body has cracks through it, like little lines of light or ‘cracks’ around the alpha cuts?

This is typically a Level of Detail issue. Mesh bodies require a lot of rendering power, so sometimes they can look broken (or even mushed up!). The first thing to do is to make sure that in your Preferences – Graphics tab, you have your ‘Level of detail’ set to 4. This should fix most issues, however sometimes if you cam away from your avi, or when you teleport, you might find your mesh body/head becomes distorted. If this happens (and your Level of Detail is at 4), open your ‘outfits’, look at the ‘wearing’ tab and right click – edit on your mesh body/head. This will bring up the ‘build’ menu that lets you move objects/resize them etc (not that you can with a mesh body because it’s rigged) but just do nothing for a few seconds, then close out of it. That will force your graphics card to focus on your mesh body for a moment, giving it enough power to load properly.

Now keep in mind, just because you look distorted to you, doesn’t mean you do to everyone else. Similarly, you may look fine to you, but if the person looking at you doesn’t have their Level of Detail set high enough, or has a slower graphics card, you’ll look weird to them. That’s life on the grid!

I hope this has helped one or two of you!

Blueberry WOW

The new Uber round has started (and it’s been a day or so, so you might even be able to get into it! haha) and I’m loving the new releases from Blueberry and HUCCI at this one. HUCCI has primarily been focusing on clothing and shoes for Slink Physique up until now, but they are steadily starting to release styles for Maitreya and TMP too (these shoes include Slink, TMP and Maitreya sizes) so be sure to check them out (the frills are super cute).

I can’t believe it’s nearly the end of the month already, I swear I was just writing a post about the start of the month!! There are a few things I’m really looking forward to in April and beyond though, namely the release of the LeLutka Mesh Head (God I love LeLutka!!), the Ulikie mesh body (no release date known as yet). Very exciting stuff, stay tuned for more info!

On a different topic, I’ve finally had the chance to photograph the beautiful winner and runner-up of the Spring Mesh Body styling challenge at the Model’s Workshop! First up we have the winner, Lorelei Maggs!

Let’s talk about Mesh, baby…

HUCCI1

The topic of mesh bodies is a hot one – mostly I believe, because there are so many different approaches to the design and use of them. It would be boring if they were all the same, mind you, but that doesn’t make it any easier to understand for those that are new to them!

What body do I choose? What is Omega and how does it work? What’s an applier outfit? What’s mesh body fitmesh?

I get asked these questions daily, and they’re valid ones. With that in mind, I’m honoured to have been asked by Jena Adder of the Model’s Workshop to speak about my experiences with mesh bodies, and answer these common questions.

The best part is that it’s open to the public (and of course, free!), so if you’re interested in learning more about mesh bodies, if you have any burning questions about them or even if you’re just wanting to see if I have anything useful to say, you can come on by, I would love to see you there ❤

Organisers: The Model’s Workshop (check them out HERE to learn more about their great work and/or joining).
Location: IN-WORLD HERE
Time/Date: 5pm SLT, Thursday 5th March (that’s this Thursday)

For more information, check out Jena’s video HERE.

Weekly Fitmesh Finds!

Well we’re at the end of the month again, which can only mean one thing… things are about to crazy in SL Fashion land!! The start of the month always marks the start of more events than you can poke a stick at, which when you’re hunting for good fitmesh fashion for your mesh body, is a GREAT thing!

I’ve been a little disappointed this week, whilst running around hunting down fitmesh for you all. The more I searched, the more I came across items that were being marketed as ‘for Maitreya’ or ‘for Belleza’ or whatever… but were in fact just standard mesh. Now I understand why this is happening (the mesh body designers really need to get their designer kits out for mesh) but for a consumer, it’s frustrating… what is really made for my body, and what isn’t??

In my mind, I have my own classification system. Let’s assume I’m talking about my Maitreya body:

Genuine Fitmesh for Maitreya/Belleza/Physique/Whatever – This is 100% fitmesh for your mesh body, usually released by the Mesh Body designer themselves, or designers they closely collaborate with. For Example – Maitreya’s clothing range

Attempted Fitmesh for Maitreya/Belleza/Physique/Whatever – This is fitmesh that has been as closely approximated as possible to the Mesh Body (ie. some talented designer has found a way to recreate the sizing/skeleton/weightings of the mesh body so they can make items for it). For example – Blueberry, DE Designs.

Standard Mesh that may work for Maitreya/Belleza/Physique/Whatever- This is basically normal mesh items (eg. a dress) that just turns out to work well with the cuts of the alpha HUD of whichever body. This is still just normal mesh.

Standard Mesh – Non fitmesh/standard sizing mesh.

So, what can you do? Well here’s what I recommend:

1) Always DEMO!! When you Demo, see if the item has a ‘sizes’ specifically for your mesh body (eg. Look at a Bluberry item, you will see a standard sizes, PLUS a size for Maitreya, Slink and Belleza). This is a good indicator (though not conclusive, always try it on) of whether or not the item is fitmesh for your body.

2) When you DEMO the item, go into edit shape (just like you would do if you wanted to make your boobs bigger haha) and move the sliders around. A well done fitmesh item will MOVE with your body as it grows – a badly made one will cause skin to poke through the minute you move the slider. Make sure you try your breasts, arms and butt.

3) When looking at the demo, make sure there is no ‘breakthrough’ at the edges of the mesh item. Remember, you can use your alpha cuts to hide ares that poke though, but if the EDGE of the dress/pant/whatever is cutting into your body, there’s no way you can alpha that out without seeing blank spaces on your body.

Well that went on for much longer than I inteded it to, so here’s this week’s finds!

Bluberry - uber
Blueberry – Cossy Shorts – at Uber (tested these, LOVE THEM, such a perfect fit!!!) – Maitreya, Belleza & Physique sizes

Hucci - maitreya
HUCCI – Yigi leggins & Waana halter top – Maitreya and Slink Physique sizes – (tested, these are attempted Fitmesh, excellent fit!)

DE designs - Tori Pants
DE Designs – Tori Pants – Maitreya, Belleza and Slink Physique sizes (untested)

DE designs - Carrie Sweater
DE Designs – Carrie Sweater – Maitreya, Belleza and Slink Physique sizes (untested)

The new Slink Physique!

slink

Well it’s been on everyone’s “Can’t wait to see it” list – and the day is finally here! Siddeon has finally released the new Slink Physique/Visage/Hands/Feet updates! That’s right, just about all of Slink’s items have had an update and it’s definitely been well worth the wait! The new Physique body is more shapely, especially in the breasts and legs, and is just better to look at overall! The same goes with the Visage, the faces are much prettier and less ‘harsh’ than they used to be, which was always my concern with them.

My only disappointment really is that whilst Slink have included a tonne more alpha HUD cuts, the cuts for the breasts are still too big to wear many standard mesh tops (grr!).

Anyway, go check it out and I will update my review for it, but in the interim here’s the run down:

The best bits:
* Saving alpha cut combinations!!! Yaaaay!! This means you can make an outfit, make the alpha selections, and save it for future use. Loving that!
* More shapely breasts, legs and hips
* More alpha cuts!
* Included skins are now on the HUD for easier user

The not so great bits:
* Still not enough breast cuts to make it easy to wear corsets/horizontally cut dresses.
* All current fitmesh items made for Physique now won’t fit perfectly… the model in itself has been changed, which means that all the poor designers out there are going to have to go back and refit all of their fitmesh physique clothing 😦 HUCCI has already announced that she’s on it, but I feel bad for the poor designers out there, so go easy on them guys! In the meantime, demo any clothing that says it’s fitmesh for physique and keep an eye out for fitmesh clothing with Physique v2 on it.

And one last thing… this blog is for you guys, so I’m wondering what you prefer looking at. Do you prefer the different styled pictures/backdrops/themes etc that I’m doing now, or would you prefer something plainer and more consistent so you can easily look at the clothing items? Thoughts?
